It's almost Fall.

Wait a second ... who am I kidding?  It was 108 degrees at my house tonight when I got home at 5:40 pm.

Maddie:  Mama, I'm hot.

Me:  I know, Muffin.  I'm sorry.  The a/c can only keep up so much and it's almost 80 degrees inside.

Maddie:  Mama, what can we do?

Me:  Grab the little boys - I'm researching rain dances on Google right now.  Meet me in the back yard in 10 minutes.
Meanwhile - back on the farm ...

These girls (and I love my girls.  They are staying moderately cool in this heat with the use of the water mister.  Best $12 we have ever spent) make the best dirt.

Here they are, taking a dirt bath in one of the garden beds.

Tim cleans out their coop and puts the chicken litter/vegetable compost here:

We have 4 of these black barrels, courtesy of oil-field leftovers.  The compost cooks here for 6-8 weeks (the black color helps and lately we have had to add some water.  You know, since it hasn't flipping RAINED since March ... but I digress.)

Tim takes some of it out, and adds it to our garden beds.

He mixed it all in, and now this bed is ready for carrots.  In about 6-8 weeks.  If we make it that long without melting from the heat and no rain.  I don't have my hopes up.

Maddie:  Mama - I got Zekie.  Tucker said he was going to stay inside in the a/c.  We are ready for the rain dance.
Cross your fingers and pray for rain.
